Andrew Carpenter Design (ACD) design and make high quality timeless furniture. Andrew originally trained as a yacht and boat builder in Falmouth, Cornwall before working for highly respected boatbuilders on the south coast of Devon, making state of the art wooden racing dinghies and high tech racing yachts. The transition from boats to furniture started in the mid 1980's after seeing early furniture designs by Phillip Starck at Mary Fox Linton in London. Inspired to learn more he studied Three Dimensional Design at Ravensbourne before working as a furniture designer in London.
Andrew started producing his own furniture in 2001 and now every piece of furniture is handmade in his Essex workshop. They are constructed using a mix of techniques borrowed from wooden yacht construction and time honoured furniture making. The materials are carefully chosen for their visual appearance, strength, lifecycle and tactile qualities. The designs reflect Andrews maritime heritage with the structure of the designs being visually bold, yet retaining a pared down aesthetic.
ACD primarily use natural organic materials and believe that design should place it's attention on sustainability, craftsmanship and quality. The use of high quality materials such as; wood, leather, wool, linoleum and linen create a tactile quality which make you feel good, have a low carbon footprint and will wear gracefully to create timeless pieces that can be passed on from generation to generation.
