FINISHES

Timber

We use different finishes on timber depending on the design. Please check the design info to see which finish is specified.

Top Oil ; The first finish is a hard wearing satin or matt wax oil which has been chosen because it gives a natural appearance to the timber, with some texture of the grain still evident to the touch. It is an easy finish to maintain and will look wonderful for many years. To maintain the appearance of your oiled furniture we recommend that spills are wiped up with a dry cloth and wet objects are not left sitting on the surface. To revitalise the surface you can gently sand it using a fine sandpaper (320 grit), always sand with the grain direction and not across the grain. Next vacuum away the dust and apply a light coat of top oil and wipe the excess oil of with a clean soft lint free cloth. If the marks are deep or a stain has penetrated the surface, start by sanding out the stain with 120 grit sand paper followed by a finer grit, such as 220 grit then finally 320 grit. Repeat the oiling process using a soft cloth concentrating on the newly sanded area, allow to dry for four hours before very lightly de-nibbing the surface with 320 grit and reapplying a second coat of oil and blend into the surrounding area.

To maintain your furniture, simply wipe with a slightly damp cloth and then remove moisture with a dry cloth, we do not advocate using furniture sprays as they may contain silicon.

Painted Surfaces

The painted surfaces are coated in two coats of high build primer to all surfaces and edges are given special attention. The primer is then sanded flat by hand in the traditional way and we then apply two or three coats of low VOC water based paint by hand to the surfaces.

To maintain, use a clean cloth run under water and well wrung out. Simply wipe surfaces and then use a dry soft cloth to wipe off any moisture. Do not use scourers and other abrasive cleaners.

Leather

Avoid using chemical polishes or soap.  Simply wipe with a damp cloth using a mild detergent such as washing up liquid and buff with a clean dry cloth.
